While the official opening of the season is April 1, many volunteers get back into the swing of things at Historic Christ Church during our annual spring education series. Held in March, the program features a variety of special presentations, guest lectures, hands-on activities, and "nuts & bolts" sessions to prepare both new and returning volunteers for the upcoming season. Additional training programs then continue througout the season.
Topics addressed in recent training sessions include the following:
- Architecture & Preservation at Christ Church
- Brickwork at Christ Church & its English Precedents
- The Dig at Corotoman
- How to Welcome Guests and Craft a Tour
- Material Culture in 18th-Century Lancaster County
The Parish and the People of Christ Church- A History of Preservation at HCC: The Colonial Period to the Historic Structure Report (1994)

Volunteers (from left) Carol Ehrsam, Kathy Broderick, Nancy Thomas, Ben Davis, Jim McCaig, Joycelyn Gilmore, and Ginny Herbermann use maps, court records, and other documents during a spring training session to learn more about Colonel James Gordon, a Presbyterian dissenter active in Christ Church Parish in the mid-eighteenth century. Such hands-on activities are an important part of the volunteer training programs. |
