SCHOOL PROGRAMS DOCENT
Job Description: School programs docents work directly with students, leading them through a range of hands-on, object-based activities. Our programs target 4th-grade Virginia Studies Standards of Learning (SOLs). A majority of the students who visit are 4th-graders; however, we do get 1st-graders as well as high school students, and we can adapt our programs to meet each group's specific needs.

Programs are offered September-November and February-June. Most classes visit during the spring. Tours are scheduled Monday-Friday and usually last from about 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Time Commitment: Time commitments depend upon the number and scheduling of classes, but docents can expect between six to nine hours a month during busy periods, such as April and May, plus training sessions in the early spring.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Enjoyment of working with children of all ages/abilities
  • Enjoyment of working with hands-on activities
  • A desire to teach history to young visitors
  • Patience and a sense of humor
