2009 4th-Grade Northern Neck History Fair

The 4th-Grade Northern Neck History Fair, sponsored by the Foundation for Historic Christ Church, the Bank of Lancaster, Bay Trust, and the Rappahannock Art League Studio Gallery, is open to all fourth-grade students from Northumberland Elementary School, Lancaster Middle School, and Chesapeake Academy in Irvington. The fair is designed to promote interest in and research on life in colonial and revolutionary Virginia by the area's fourth-graders, who study the period as part of their Virginia Studies Standards of Learning.

Below is a complete list of rules for the competition:

  • Open to 4th-grade students from Lancaster Middle, Northumberland Elementary, and Chesapeake Academy.

  • Projects must deal with some element of Virginia history from the period 1607-1789.

  • Entries accepted in two categories:
    • Best Original Essay: An original essay on an event, person, or cultural development which shaped Virginia during the period 1607-1789. Essay should be about 300 words.

    • Best Original Exhibit: An original exhibit, display, or design which tells the story of an event, person, or cultural development in Virginia during the period 1607-1789.

  • Only one person may work on a project submitted in the Essay category.

  • One or two people may work on a project submitted in the Exhibit category.

  • Exhibits may include models, dioramas, displays, etc. Be creative! And try to use combinations of images, objects, and text to tell your story.

  • Essays should be in your own words, not copied from a book or website. The judges want to read what you have learned about a particular subject, not what you have copied. Essays should be typed if possible.

  • Each student or pair of students is allowed only one entry, in either the Essay or Exhibit category. Students may not submit entries for both categories.

  • Staff from Historic Christ Church will be available to assist students with historical research and/or exhibit design if needed.
