"Archaeology in the Classroom"

Grades: 1-12
Length: 1-1.5 hours

Bring archaeology to your classroom with this exciting program. An overview of the basic principles and techniques of archaeology and its role in studying colonial Virginia begins the lesson. Next, students examine original artifacts connected to Christ Church and Corotoman, Robert “King” Carter’s home plantation. Students then excavate “shoebox sites” to uncover artifacts representative of colonial Virginia. A discussion of the artifacts found and their meaning concludes the program.

Archaeology is offered independently or as a pre-visit to "Colonial Discovery Days" or "A Parish and Its People". A maximum of 25 students is allowed per group. Teachers working together may schedule the program for repeat sessions as needed.
