School Programs

As one of the commonwealth's great historic and cultural resources, Historic Christ Church invites your class to explore life in colonial Virginia through the perspective of one of its fundamental institutions: the Church of England. Students participate in a range of hands-on activities and use primary documents to learn more about the following themes:

  • Church and state in colonial Virginia
  • Religious freedom in Revolutionary Virginia
  • Classical architecture
  • Colonial building technologies
  • Archaeology
  • Social structure and community in colonial Virginia
  • Tobacco and the colonial economy
  • Daily life in the eighteenth century
  • Foodways and farming implements in colonial Virginia
  • The Enlightenment and eighteenth-century religion
  • Colonial clothing
  • Colonial games
  • Past vs. Present
  • Shapes, Patterns and Math in Architecture

School programs are available to students from all levels, K-12 and collegiate, in two basic tours. "Colonial Discovery Days" is tailored for Virginia Studies Standards of Learning and can be adapted for grades K-5. "A Parish and Its People" can be adapted for grades 6-12 and college students. Click on each for a more detailed program description. The Foundation also offers the outreach program "Archaeology in the Classroom."

Programs are available year round and provided free of charge through the generous support of the Foundation and its volunteers and supporters.

To help promote an active learning environment that incorporates numerous hands-on lessons, a maximum of sixty students per group is allowed. If your group exceeds sixty, we can schedule you over several dates. Please provide one chaperone for every ten students.

All groups must pre-register. Teachers are encouraged to register early in the school year. Confirmation packets, which include pre-visit materials, will be sent after registration.

All programs feature a variety of hands-on activities, reproduction objects, and/or primary documents and are designed to enhance the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLS).

In inclement weather, programs can be adapted for indoor activities or teachers may reschedule if desired.

To schedule a group or for more information on school programs, please contact the Foundation office or email the Education Director.
