| We recognize Christ Church, Lancaster, to be the most intact as well as aesthetically appealing of Virginia's colonial Anglican parish churches to survive into the twenty-first century. We are committed to the preservation of this precious National Landmark as grateful stewards of the original donor, Robert Carter, and the many people who through the years have championed this cause. We subscribe to the use of preservation techniques of the highest order administered in the most professional manner. We will preserve the original fabric where possible and replace in kind where not, unless generally recognized preservation practice dictates otherwise. We will employ no treatment on historic fabric that is irreversible. Our approach to all preservation procedures will be to do as little as possible commensurate with recognized preservation practice and, where intervention is necessary, to assure that the result is as nearly like the original, eighteenth-century condition as can be achieved. Our immediate goal shall be to maintain this church as it now stands. Our ultimate goal is to return the interior as close to its appearance prior to the time of the disestablishment as is possible. |
