| John Carter I's tombstone lies in the north side of the chancel in Christ Church. It is unlikely his remains actually lie beneath the marker. When his son Robert Carter left money in his will to help finance construction of Christ Church, he specifically requested that "the Chancel be preserved as a burial place...for my family as the present Chancel is...." This indicates John Carter was buried in the chancel of the first Christ Church (the frame building of 1670 he had constructed) and his marker was most likely moved to the chancel of the brick church sometime around its completion in 1735. |
