Questions This document noted what important event in Christ Church’s history?Answers If you look at the very bottom of the page you will find the answer: “Mr Currie called.” This record from the second vestry book (1739-1786) notes
the vestry’s decision in July 1743 to hire David Currie as minister of Christ
Church Parish. The vestry states that Currie produced a letter to the
churchwardens and gentlemen of the vestry recommending him as “ordained
by the Bishop of London and a person of Good Life Conversation Merrit &
Esteem to Suply the vacancy ocasioned by the Death of the Late Revd. Mr.
John Bell Decd.” As it turned out, the vestry made a good move in hiring Currie, for he served the parish until 1791, a tenure of some 48 years. Interestingly, the notation “Mr. Currie called” is signed E. W., which stands for Edmund Withers, minister of Christ Church Parish from 1852-1867, who regularly made such comments while reviewing the old vestry records. |
