Questions

This photograph of Christ Church’s interior was taken around which of the following periods?

a)1865, after the end of the Civil War
b)1878, when Harper’s New Monthly Magazine featured an article on Christ Church, Lancaster
c)1927, when several major preservation projects on the interior were being undertaken
d)1958, the year the Foundation for Historic Christ Church first formed

Answers The answer is c, 1927. The original tablets in the altarpiece were made of a black canvas with the Lord’s Prayer, Creed, and Ten Commandments painted in yellow or gold letters (Harper’s New Monthly Magazine actually documented this in 1878). By 1922, the tablets seen here had been installed, around the same time the font and communion table had also been repaired. Featuring black lettering on a white background, the Lord’s Prayer appeared on the north tablet, while the Apostles’ Creed appeared on the south. By 1934, the third set of tablets, those now present in the church, had been put in place. These tablets were modeled after those at St. Mary’s White Chapel, with the Decalogue only spread across both sides.
