c)Christ Church Vestry Book, 1665-1759

Answers

The answer is b, Processioners’ Returns, 1711-1783. As directed by the county court, the vestry of Christ Church Parish was required every four years to procession, or mark, the property lines of landowners within the parish. These records proved extremely valuable to the Parish Profile Project, as they helped researchers and mappers plot landholdings in the parish and identify which parishioners resided on them.

The page shown here is the first page from the Processioners’ Returns which began in the fall of 1711. The record makes reference (fifth line from the top) to the Poplar Neck Quarter formerly owned by Major William Lister, who had died in May of 1709. Robert Carter would acquire these lands in 1713, incorporating them into his extensive holdings as one of his 48 quarters.
