Investigations on Brick Kiln Site-October 1979
In October of 1979, archaeologists from the Virginia Research Center for Archaeology (a division then of the State Historic Landmarks Commission, which today is the Virginia Department of Historic Resources) uncovered the remains of one of the brick kilns used in constructing Christ Church. Discovered accidentally during work on an addition to the Carter Reception Center, archaeologists Carter Hudgins, Glyn Furgurson, Dennis Pogue, and Mac Goodwin excavated an 18 by 30 ft. area which formed the kiln site. This work provided the first evidence of where Robert Carter's brick kilns sat in relation to the church. A plaque marks the site for visitors today.
Volunteers observe as archaeologists Dennis Pogue (l) and Mac Goodwin excavate the site of the brick kiln discovered in the fall of 1979.
