| In September 2002, the Board of Directors adopted a Strategic Plan mapping the Foundation's future through 2008, the year of its 50th anniversary. The plan builds upon its predecessors and draws substantially from the work of several active committees. Designed to articulate the Foundation's vision and reflect its fundamental values, the Strategic Plan is expressed in six objectives and twenty strategies. |

VISION Pristine and beautifully preserved Christ Church in its pastoral setting interpreted for fascinated visitors by enthusiastic, knowledgeable volunteers, augmented by artifacts, displays and publications, utilizing all available media, that illuminate the story of Christ Church, Robert Carter, his immediate family, and selected people and elements of life in Christ Church Parish in the early eighteenth century, guided and informed by continuing examination of the historic record and archaeological exploration of the site. |
OBJECTIVES- Preserve Historic Christ Church in its pristine form
- Develop the historic resources associated with Historic Christ Church to full potential
- Provide the highest quality programs of interpretation and education to the public, selected audiences, children and Christ Church volunteers
- Maintain and develop the human resources essential to fulfillment of the Foundation’s mission
- Maintain and develop the physical resources surrounding Historic Christ Church in a manner consistent with the Foundation’s mission and operational requirements
- Project and provide the current and long-term financial resources required to implement the objectives and strategies of the Foundation

Strategies
PRESERVATION - Carry out the present multi-year preservation plan, authorized in 2001, including comprehensive conservation of the doors, window sash and entablature, and, an assessment of, and recommendations for, repair of the Carter tombs and churchyard wall.
- Formulate a preservation master plan for the period 2004 – 2007, which incorporates the findings of the assessment of the Carter tombs and churchyard wall and encompasses the pulpit, pews, altar rail, communion table, reredos, chancel woodwork, font, memorial stones, paving stones and gallery.
- Evaluate the masonry, sills, stoops, roof, plaster and attic annually, ordering maintenance and repairs as needed.
- Update the Historic Structure Report, incorporating new findings about the Church, documentation of post-1993 projects and a long-range plan that specifically addresses each element of the Church and its appurtenances.

RESEARCH, ARCHAEOLOGY, RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND UTILIZATION - Based on the findings of the 1999 and 2002 Identification Surveys, develop a comprehensive understanding of the site surrounding Historic Christ Church, incorporating appropriate findings into the interpretation of the Church.
- Acquire and organize all available information about the Church, its origins, its benefactors, its clergy, the dynamics of religion in Virginia and the people and circumstances of life in Christ Church Parish in the early eighteenth century.
- Through a consulting curator, and/or, by using the resources of a more sophisticated, willing institution, adopt and implement appropriate collection management policies and procedures consistent with the Foundation’s mission, and, maximize information management technology in the storage, retrieval and dissemination of the collection and research records.

INTERPRETATION AND VISITATION - Maximize the visibility of Christ Church as a desirable historic site destination through a marketing and public relations strategy with national, regional and local components.
- Provide visitors to Christ Church an interesting, informative experience through tours given by skilled, trained docents; interpretive exhibits on the grounds; and a Reception Center Gallery kept fresh and interesting through additions to the permanent displays, provisions for rotating, temporary displays and the addition of computer presented material.

EDUCATION - Offer to Christ Church volunteers and the community informative, interesting and edifying learning experiences on the Church, its origins, its benefactors, its clergy, the dynamics of religion in Virginia and the people and circumstances of life in Christ Church Parish in the early eighteenth century.
- Seeking guidance from teachers and administrators, sustain and refine the school program, conceive new activities that will engage the interest of students and continue the Second Saturday programs in the summer.

HUMAN RESOURCES - Assure the Foundation’s successful future through a strong board of directors, combined with effective recruitment, training and recognition of dedicated, quality volunteers.
- The Foundation officers and Volunteer Council leadership will design and staff standing and ad hoc committees appropriate to achievement of the stated objectives and strategies.
- Attract and retain qualified, experienced employees and consultants by maintaining a system of compensation, benefits and personnel policies that is commensurate with comparable organizations in the field.

AUXILIARY BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS - Building on the 1998 Future Space Requirements for the Foundation for Historic Christ Church, develop and implement a site plan that enhances presentation and interpretation consistent with the mission; provides a well-situated, attractive and adequately-sized Reception Center and Gallery; creates appropriate space for research, education, volunteer activities, administration and storage; includes necessary parking areas, driveways and walkways; and provides a long-range maintenance plan for the auxiliary facilities.
- Protect and enhance the pastoral setting surrounding the Church by continuing the acquisition of contiguous properties and creation of an historic district surrounding the Church.
- Maintain the grounds and plantings surrounding Christ Church in a manner consistent with the Garden Club of Virginia plan where appropriate and elsewhere in a manner that enhances and complements the Church.

FINANCIAL RESOURCES - Prudently invest the assets of the Foundation, providing principal growth and a reasonable return to be used for preservation and operating purposes.
- Project the costs associated with achievement of the objectives of the Strategic Plan and translate them into multi-year and annual operating budgets.
- Retain the services, either as consultant or employee, of a qualified development professional to design and implement programs of current and deferred giving necessary to advance the objectives and strategies of the Foundation.
